SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 2, 2016) – VIA Metropolitan Transit and the City of Kirby are proud to announce the completion of key enhancements at several VIA bus stop locations along Old Seguin Road, including solar-powered NextGen shelters and improved sidewalk access.

The City of Kirby will be among the first in VIA’s 14 member cities to feature solar-powered lights installed in seven new VIA bus shelters. VIA’s Fleet and Facilities Division designed the innovative solar lighting components that are able to operate with exposure to about six hours of sunlight per day.

“We are proud to partner with Kirby in order to provide multimodal transportation options for the area. The new amenities, combined with the recent service changes to Routes 21 and 630, speak to VIA’s commitment to serving the Kirby community for years to come,” VIA President/CEO Jeffrey C. Arndt said.

As part of the project, VIA provided improvements to nine bus stops, including crosswalks, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks and connections, and bus stopping pads within the roadway. Seven of the nine stops were equipped with NextGen shelters with solar-panels. Each of the new shelters features custom roof panels highlighting the City Seal of Kirby and markers along the area’s Old Spanish Trail route.

“The VIA bus stop improvements project greatly benefits the citizens of Kirby by providing ADA compliance, seating and shade,” said City of Kirby Mayor Timothy Wilson.

The construction work for this project also reflects VIA’s commitment to local business. A local Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE), Industrial Construction Company, completed the construction work for the shelter pads, sidewalks and bus pads.
