Free e-library now at VIA Transit Centers

You could call it a movement. The debut of VIA Metropolitan Transit’s new Ride & Read program has given new momentum to literacy efforts in Bexar County with free access to the nation’s first all-digital library. The program, a partnership between VIA and the county’s BiblioTech e-library, provides VIA customers free access to more than 40,000 downloadable titles.

Freestanding BiblioTech digital kiosks and wall-mounted, ADA-accessible kiosks have been installed at six transit centers throughout the VIA service area with additional locations to be announced in the future.

Membership to the BibioTech digital library is free to Bexar County residents. The digital collection is available 24 hours a day at BexarBibliotech.org. BiblioTech members can access their downloads anytime, including aboard VIA buses and vans or at transit centers, using VIA’s free 4G LTE Wi-Fi. E-books remain available for two weeks before they are electronically returned.

  1. Log on to VIA Free Wi-Fi on your smartphone or tablet.
  2. Download the free BiblioTech app atBexarBiblioTech.org.

VIA NextGen shelters powered by sunshine

Several new VIA shelters are now solar powered, a feature that’s part of a larger project to provide crosswalks, ADA-compliant sidewalks and connections, bus stopping pads within the roadway, and 1,000 shelters throughout the VIA service area.

VIA’s solar-powered NextGen bus shelters are part of key enhancements for rider amenities throughout the region. The City of Kirby is among the first of VIA’s 14 member cities to feature solar-powered lights. VIA’s Fleet and Facilities Division designed the innovative solar lighting components to operate with exposure to about six hours of sunlight per day.
