Planned Facilties

South Central Transit Center

A new transit center just south of South Park Mall is scheduled to open by June 2008. This new facility will offer passengers a comfortable air-conditioned seating area to use while waiting to transfer from one route to another. The Information Center will be staffed with customer service personnel who will sell passes, distribute bus schedules and offer customer assistance. In addition to initially serving routes 51, 520, 524, 550, and 551, the transit center will also serve as a southside hub for occasional Special Event service.

Other features of the transit center include: restrooms, vending machines, telephones, 12 bus bays and 82 parking spaces.

Adjacent to the transit center will be a new safety and operational training facility for VIA bus operators.

South Texas Medical Center Transit Center

Currently planned for the corner of Medical Drive and Babcock, the 7.51-acre site will serve as a transit center and park and ride for bus service and the site for VIA’s future premiere transit service, Bus Rapid Transit. The facility will be designed in keeping with the aesthetics of the surrounding area while providing a state-of-the-art facility.

Planned features include:

  • Staff ticket window – route, schedule, general information, and ticket sales
  • System map display – displays of VIA routes throughout the service area
  • Waiting area –inside lobby with seating for 60
  • Parking – vehicle parking for 128 spaces and additional parking for the disabled
  • Covered waiting area – overhead canopies for customer waiting outside
  • Bike racks
  • Real-time travel information –outside as well as inside the building
  • On-site security and installed security cameras

West Side Multimodal Center

The goal of the WSMM is to create a central station for multiple modes of transportation to come together, offering seamless connections for customers. The facility is envisioned as a terminus for bus rapid transit (BRT), numerous bus lines that converge in downtown, the anticipated Austin-San Antonio commuter rail, inter-city bus service, and taxi services. It also has great potential to serve as an impetus for near-west side economic revitalization.
