Riding transit can save people almost $9,000 each year

Posted: 7/16/2009

People who ride VIA Metropolitan Transit can save up to $8,824 annually according to figures released by the American Public Transportation Association, or APTA.

“The Transit Savings Report,” which is released monthly by APTA, calculates the average annual and monthly savings for public transit users across the nation. The report examines how an individual in a two-person household can save money by taking public transportation and living with one less car. Monthly transit costs are compared to monthly driving costs, which APTA calculates using the 2009 AAA average cost of driving formula and the 2009 Colliers International Parking Rate Study.

According to the July report, transit riders in the San Antonio area can save $735 per month on their travel costs. This savings amount is based on the cost of VIA’s $30 monthly Big Pass as compared to the AAA reported gasoline price for San Antonio (on July 9) of $2.416 per gallon plus a monthly parking rate of $95. By switching to transit and giving up driving one car for just one year, families can save almost $9,000 in their household budgets.

People interested in giving VIA a try can click here to get more information on bus routes and schedules. They can also plan their trips on VIA by using Google Maps.
