As part of Walk and Roll 2009, VIA Metropolitan Transit will offer free rides to anyone who boards the bus with a bicycle on Friday, May 1, which is the day of the Walk and Roll to Work Rally. The rally will begin at 8:00 a.m. in Main Plaza.
All of VIA’s buses (except the downtown streetcars) are equipped with bicycle racks, and each rack can hold two bicycles.
VIA is also increasing the amenities available to riders in the central business district. A new Downtown Information Center, or DIC, is under construction and should be open for business in mid-May. The new DIC will be located at 211 West Commerce in the Melrose Building, and it will have an air-conditioned waiting area, ticket sales, pocket schedules, a real-time bus arrival display, restrooms, photo identification processing, telephones, water fountains, and vending machines. The current information center on Houston Street at Navarro Street will close with the opening of the new facility.
VIA buses are wheelchair-accessible through the use of ramps or lifts.
