VIA honors safe drivers with Million Mile recognition

Posted: 5/27/2009

At their regular meeting on May 26, the members of the VIA Board of Trustees recognized 23 agency employees for their safe driving records by welcoming them into the One Million Mile Club and the Two Million Mile Club.

The Million Mile Clubs are part of a program sponsored by the National Safety Council to reward bus and van operators for the safe operations of transit vehicles. VIA organized its own One Million Mile Club in 1998 and started the Two Million Mile Club the following year.

To qualify for membership in the One Million Mile Club, a bus or van operator must demonstrate an exceptional dedication to safe bus operations by completing 12 and a half consecutive years (or 25,000 vehicle hours) without a preventable accident. To get into the more exclusive Two Million Mile Club, an operator must complete two 12-and-a-half-year periods or drive 50,000 vehicle hours with the same safety criterion. VIA honors inductees into these clubs with wall plaques, lapel pins, and patches that members can wear proudly on their uniform jackets.

On May 26, the VIA Board recognized 18 new members of the One Million Mile Club and five new members of the Two Million Mile Club. This brings the total membership of both clubs to 217 for One Million and 34 for Two Million.

VIA also has a Three Million Mile Club that requires a member to have completed three 12-and-a-half-year periods or 75,000 vehicle hours without a preventable accident. There is currently just one member of this club.
