VIA forms commission to look at streetcars

Posted: 9/16/2009

VIA Metropolitan Transit announced the formation of a 20-member commission to evaluate the feasibility of rail streetcar service in San Antonio’s central business district.

The Commission on Intra-City Rail and Streetcar will assist the VIA Board of Trustees in an advisory capacity and oversee the completion of a study that has been evaluating the feasibility of circulator rail service in the downtown area. The study is being conducted in coordination with the Downtown Alliance, and it will be completed in November of this year. When the study is done, the commission will present a written report of its findings to the VIA Board of Trustees.

Marty Wender will lead the new commission, which will hold up to four regular meetings during the duration of the study period. Special meetings could be called at the discretion of the chairman. The commission could also form subcommittees to study alignment and technology, economic development and policy, and financing.
