VIA proudly operates one of the best transit systems in the country. For over 30 we have worked to meet the transportation needs of our community from generation to generation. But truly meeting the needs of our community means going beyond just providing services today. We must continuously consider new technology, review growth trends, and evaluate other improvements to assure we are the innovative and responsive agency for the future.

SmartWaySA

SmartWaySA is VIA’s exciting one year community-driven study to develop a Long Range Comprehensive Transportation Plan for Bexar County up to the year 2035. Through SmartWaySA, high capacity transit corridors will be identified and prioritized. A range of transit alternatives will be recommended for the corridors along with any suggested supporting facilities. Many high capacity transit alternatives will be considered for our region including bus rapid transit, electric streetcar, light rail, commuter rail, HOV lanes and others. SmartWaySA site.

Bus Rapid Transit

VIA’s first Bus Rapid Transit project along Fredericksburg Road between the Medical Center and downtown is well under way and is scheduled to start service in late 2012. Also scheduled to open in conjunction with the service are the Medical Center Transit Center and the Westside Multimodal Center. VIABrt site.
