VIA grows VIA Link Downtown fleet with two electric vehicles

VIA Metropolitan Transit is adding two Chevrolet Equinox electric vehicles to its VIA Link Downtown fleet, with service beginning Thursday, Oct. 29.

The addition of the Chevrolet Equinox builds on VIA’s ongoing efforts to evaluate service options and respond to the evolving transportation needs of downtown San Antonio. Additionally, the VIA Link service has reached 2.5 million trips since its inception in 2019.

The new vehicles will operate exclusively alongside the existing VIA Link Downtown fleet. While customers cannot specifically request a Chevrolet Equinox for their trip, they will be able to see when one has been assigned to pick them up through the VIA Link app. The vehicles feature a distinct VIA-branded design that maintains the familiar VIA Link look with an added element identifying their electric capabilities.

“Adding these vehicles gives us another opportunity to explore how different technologies can support our service and better understand what works best for our customers and our operations,” VIA President & CEO Jon Gary Herrera said.

Since its launch, VIA Link Downtown has provided nearly 34,000 passenger trips, connecting customers to jobs, businesses, entertainment and destinations throughout the downtown area.

VIA continues to explore opportunities to enhance downtown mobility as San Antonio grows. On Oct. 19, the agency launched VIA Link After Midnight, a new pilot service designed to help overnight workers and other late-night riders in the downtown area get home safely and affordably after regular bus service ends.

Rides for both the VIA Link electric vehicles and VIA Link After Midnight cost $1.30, and can be booked in the VIA Link app.
