Reduced Fares

A VIA Reduced Fare ID or Student ID is required and must be presented when boarding in order to pay reduced fares or use discounted passes (children and active-duty U.S. military in uniform are not required to show ID). Senior citizens, Medicare recipients, and disabled veterans can obtain their Reduced Fare ID at VIA’s Customer Service Centers. This service is not currently available at the Randolph, Ellis Alley or Ingram locations.

Senior Citizens (62 & older)

Seniors age 62 and older must present a government-issued ID with date of birth (state ID, driver’s license, veteran’s ID, or passport).

Veterans

Veterans who hold a disability rating for aide and attendance, housebound or permanent and total disability rating at the 80-percent level must have written documentation from the Department of Veterans Affairs verifying their disability rating.

Medicare Recipients

Medicare recipients must present a valid Medicare Card and government issued ID.

Persons with Certain Disabilities

Persons with certain disabilities can download the Reduced Fare Application, or acquire one from VIA’s Information Centers.

Students

All students (high school, college and trade school) must present a school-issued Student ID. Students attending schools that do not issue student IDs, should inquire at their respective school office or visit a VIA Information Center to obtain a Reduced Fare Card. Contact VIA Customer Service at (210) 362-2020 for details on reduced fare eligibility. Elementary and Middle School students are not required to have a Reduced Fare Card effective Aug. 1, 2017.

Active-Duty U.S. Military

Active-duty U.S. military who are in uniform or who present a VIA Reduced Fare ID my pay a reduced fare or use a Reduced Fare pass.

Children

Children 5-13 years old are not required to show ID effective Aug. 1, 2017. Children 4 years and under ride free.

  • Reduced Fares for Active-Duty Military

    Reduced Fare Passes can be purchased at any VIA Information Center and online. Day Passes can be purchased on the bus. Reduced fare 31-Day Passes are available at several retail stores, including most H-E-B locations (Reduced fare 7-Day Passes are currently not available at H-E-B).

    Who qualifies for a VIA Semester Pass, and what’s needed to get one?

    Students enrolled in grades K-12 qualify with:

    • A valid school or VIA student photo ID, and

    • Proof of registration, or

    • Semester Pass application.

    Students enrolled at a local college, university or trade school qualify with:

    • A valid school or VIA student photo ID,

    • Proof of registration/enrollment in an accredited college/university degree plan, or trade school curriculum program, and

    • Proof of paid tuition.

    Student Reduced Fare

    Student Reduced Fare Cards are available at no cost for qualifying students if the school does not provide student IDs.

    With this card students can buy VIA passes (excluding Semester Pass) at half the price or pay half fare each time you ride regular bus service or Special Event Park & Ride Service.

    A valid card must be shown when boarding the bus to receive the discount.

    Elementary and Middle School students are not required to have a Reduced Fare Card effective Aug. 1, 2017 to receive the student discount.

     

    Where can I get a VIA Semester Pass?

    UTSA and Alamo Colleges* students can get their pass on campus.

    • Semester Pass is included in the tuition for Alamo Colleges students.

    • Passes are available at any VIA Information Center.
