VIA is reimagining transit of the future, and that includes VIA Link, an on-demand ride-sharing service that began operating in May.

Nearly 20,000 passengers have used the service since its launch and on Saturday, Aug. 10, VIA will have a Community Celebration at Rolling Oaks Mall to recognize the significant impact VIA Link is having on the Northeast Side.

The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is open to the public.

Riders will get a hands-on look at a VIA Link minivan, information about the new service, back-to-school information for teachers/students, and have a chance to win prizes and take photos with the VIA mascots.

VIA Link is a ride-sharing pilot program designed to provide on-demand transit in the Northeast San Antonio area that allows riders to reserve a van, and take a trip with as many as five people going to various destinations. Like Uber or Lyft service, customers can request a trip through a convenient app and can begin and end a trip anywhere within the Northeast zone or connect with the regular VIA bus service to continue their trip outside of the zone.

VIA introduced VIA Link as part of its “VIA Reimagined” plan to provide smart transit options, using technology and partnerships for better service. The VIA Link on-demand model improves customer wait times and frequency through more flexible trip options for Northeast San Antonio, where traditional bus routes could only run about once an hour.

This innovative rideshare-style service allows passengers to book and manage trips on an easy-to-use app, online or by phone, and track their ride as it approaches — using the same fares and discounts as regular VIA bus service.
