Bus, VIAtrans and VIA Link service resumed regular schedules Friday

With the worst of the winter storm behind us, VIA understands the community must keep moving and invites passengers to return to our regular bus, VIAtrans and VIA Link service with free fares Saturday and Sunday, February 20-21.

After four days of suspended service due to road closures and hazardous road conditions caused by severe weather, VIA returned to a regular schedule Friday morning, including nearly 300 VIAtrans trips booked for customers traveling to dialysis appointments.

Never in its 43-year history has VIA suspended service for more than a few hours. As weather and travel conditions threatened safe delivery of service this week, VIA vehicles stopped running from Sunday night through Thursday in the interest of customer and employee safety.

“While it was a difficult decision to pause service this week, it allowed us to prioritize the wellbeing of our passengers as well as our frontline employees, who continue to demonstrate their dedication to service and safety, even in the face of multiple crises,” VIA President/CEO Jeffrey C. Arndt said Friday. “We appreciate our customers’ patience during this time and are thankful to our VIA team members and public safety partners whose work allowed us to weather this storm and get back on the road as soon as possible.”

Though regular schedules were suspended, VIA continued to coordinate with the City of San Antonio’s Emergency Operations Center to support local efforts that included delivering seniors and families to warming centers, supporting outreach efforts to move people experiencing homelessness, and providing warming spots at area shelters.

With fuel and other basic items in short supply while the community recovers and restocks, VIA is offering two days of fare-free service on bus, VIAtrans and VIA Link, to help people make safe trips to get food, medicine, and reach other essential destinations.

Customers are reminded that COVID-19 health and safety precautions remain in place, including face coverings at all times while on board a VIA vehicle or at a VIA facility for non-exempt persons, age 2 and older.
