Veterans encouraged to apply to become a VIA operator, mechanic

This Veterans Day, VIA Metropolitan Transit is encouraging military veterans to apply to be a VIA bus or van operators or mechanic and be part of the team that helps keep San Antonio moving.

The agency has a consistent record of recruiting veterans and has been honored by the Texas Workforce Commission and Texas Veterans Commission with the “We Hire Vets” recognition program. This recognition honors employers who actively seek to hire former members of the military and have a workforce composed of at least 10-percent veterans. Nearly 20% of VIA employees are U.S. military veterans, with several active-duty reservists among VIA’s 2,200 employees.

“VIA is proud to recruit and celebrate our employees who served their country and have chosen to continue serving in their community,” VIA President/CEO Jeffrey C. Arndt said. “We are making a plea to veterans now, to look into a career with VIA as we work to replenish our ranks and make sure we can maintain service for the people who rely on us to stay connected.”

A national transit labor shortage has impacted route frequency and availability for transit agencies across Texas and the United States. VIA temporarily adjusted service levels to available staffing levels in October. Operators and mechanics are needed to recover and continue growing service.

VIA is actively hiring bus/van operators and mechanics. Starting salary for drivers is $20.25 with a $2,500 bonus being offered. Applications are being accepted online at VIAinfo.net/employment. Paid training is provided for new hires with classes starting every two weeks. No experience is necessary. VIA is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. VIA supports equal opportunities for all without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, disability, sex, or age.
